By starting an empty document and communicating in it with Copilot through a prompt, Copilot creates the desired content.

Creating a prompt for Microsoft Copilot in Word

A prompt is a question to Copilot after which the tool gets to work, for example:

• Create a job posting for the position of account manager at Compete. The start date is 1 August, based on previous vacancies and these job requirements (refer to document or website);
• Write a blog article on the importance of good cyber security;
• Create a report on tickets handled in the last quarter (refer to an Excel sheet containing the figures).

Be clear and detailed

The more specific and clear you draft the prompt, the more detailed Copilot can draft a draft text. For example, if you have a summary or list from which Copilot can work, add it to your prompt.

You can also specify which tone Copilot should use. Should the document be drafted formally or informally? Should it be businesslike or accessible?

Is the outcome still not how you envisaged? Then you can always suggest a prompt to Copilot to improve it, for example:

• Make the document shorter;
• Make the tone more businesslike;
• Add this information (refer to the content of another document).
