Microsoft Copilot is Microsoft’s AI tool. This assistant feature is seamlessly integrated into all Microsoft products, such as the Office applications, Edge (browser) and Windows. How does this new AI tool work, what can you do with it and how safe is it? In this blog article, we will tell you all about it.
Microsoft Copilot combines Large Language Models (LLM) with data from your business. It is connected to the LLM of OpenAI, known for ChatGPT, through a partnership with this well-known AI producer. In fact, Copilot combines ChatGPT with your data in Microsoft 365, using the Microsoft Graph API. The technology behind it is complicated, but the possibilities are endless and easy to use.
There is an important difference between Microsoft Copilot and ChatGPT, though. The questions and content you provide to Microsoft are not used to train the AI model. With ChatGPT, they are. With Microsoft, your data is safe. Read more about it below.
Microsoft Copilot has integrations into every Microsoft tool and service. By far the most popular of these are integrations with Outlook, Teams, Word, PowerPoint and Excel. The AI assistant can summarise Word documents, answer emails and analyse Excel files in no time.
Like ChatGPT, Copilot can prepare a document, for instance a letter or a blog, based on your request. It can improve the grammar of a document or prepare a summary of a report.
And are you overwhelmed by an overflowing mailbox after your holidays? Previously, the tip for that was to delete everything and what is really important will report back, but with Copilot, you can request a summary of all unread emails and then have your mailbox cleaned up. The same goes for Teams. Ask the Copilot to make a summary of the meeting, so you don’t have to write it yourself. Or have your quarterly figures analysed in Excel and know how things stand in no time.
The main purpose of Copilot is to save time and take repetitive tasks off your hands, leaving time for more important things, like colleagues and customers. It is a very useful tool, but it is still in its infancy. Therefore, it is important to always check Copilot’s output with a critical eye.
Watch here the introduction of Microsoft Copilot.
Microsoft Copilot is available to all M365 users for €28.10 per month per user. This sounds like a lot of money, but when used efficiently, it also yields a lot, especially time.
If you use Microsoft applications, Microsoft already has access to your business data. Copilot only has access to the information it needs for the question asked. This data will be within the confines of Microsoft 365. That means it is in line with Microsoft’s policies on privacy and data protection. Unlike OpenAI, where all data is stored in an open source environment. The input entered and used in Copilot is not passed on to OpenAI.
In addition, Microsoft claims that your queries and data will not be used for training purposes. Instead, it will use publicly available data to train the AI model. Furthermore, Microsoft states that it will comply with all future laws and regulations. You can learn more about Microsoft Copilots commitment around data here.
